This was everything I wanted. And the tour company was amazing to work with. They went out of their way to show us the dolphins, and the guide was awesome.

This was a fantastic day. Loved the boat trip. How wonderful to be able to go through the hold in the Rock. Saw a huge manta ray and shark. Would definitely recommend this tour.

What you can expect

There is something truly magical about the Hole in the Rock cruise, where you’ll discover one of New Zealand’s most amazing natural phenomena in the Bay of Islands. This half-day cruise is abundant in spectacular views as you sail through the Bay of Islands on a custom-built power catamaran, departing from Paihia Wharf (or Russell Wharf if requested). Make your way to the end of the Cape Brett Peninsula and discover the Hole in the Rock, passing through this iconic geographical formation with such precision, you’ll be convinced you’re not going to be able to fit through!

The Hole in the Rock is not only an amazing natural geological phenomenon, but it is also an important icon of local folklore. According to local Māori legend, warriors departing for battle would canoe through the massive hole. The fortunate ones would feel a drop of water on their heads – an indication of luck in battle.

With dolphin viewing, an extended island stopover at the beautiful Urupukapuka Island, and indoor and outdoor viewing platforms, you’ll drink in the natural wonder of this part of the world from an intimate first-hand perspective on the Hole in the Rock cruise. The Bay of Islands and the Hole in the Rock need to be seen to be believed, and this is the perfect way to soak in both, while also meeting the marine wildlife who call this area home.

Dolphin Viewing The Dolphin Seeker is fully licensed by the Department of Conservation for dolphin viewing, and the highly experienced and friendly crew are very adept at locating the dolphins or whales. Thankfully, it is a rare event not to spot these friendly, curious marine mammals, so make sure you keep an eye out for the common and bottlenose dolphins, whales and other marine life during the day.
